M is a 1931 German thriller, an early precursor to film noir, about a frantic citywide manhunt for a child murderer (Peter Lorre). Listed in the credits as simply the Murderer, he roams the streets and lures in young girls by offering them candy and balloons, before killing them. The panicked populace of the city band together to catch the Murderer, even the city's criminal underworld, whose life is unbearable because of the number of policemen assigned to the streets. In parallel cuts, both the police and the criminals are shown planning their approach to catching the Murderer, remarkably similar in their methods and demeanor. As a mob mentality overtakes the city's population, an innocent man is nearly killed for acting kindly to a child. Are the people of the city any better than the Murderer? Seen by many today as a commentary on the rise of Nazism in 1930s Germany, M was directed by Fritz Lang, who fled Germany in 1934 because of his Jewish lineage.
