M. Butterfly is a 1993 romantic drama based on a true story of espionage and romantic deception during the tumultuous 1960s in China. Rene Gallimard (Jeremy Irons), a diplomat for the French government, has been assigned to Beijing, where he represents the Western nations during the Vietnam conflict. He meets and falls in love with an opera singer, Song Liling (John Lone). He begins a long affair with Song, which begins to parallel Puccini's great opera "Madame Butterfly," a story of obsessive love and betrayal. Over their long affair, Gallimand reveals state secrets to Song. Only years later does Gallimand discover that Song was a secret agent for the Chinese government. More surprisingly, Song was also a man. Gallimand finds himself humiliated before the international political community and shaken by the deception. Directed by David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises"), this unexpected love story is based on the Tony Award winning play of the same name by David Henry Hwang.
