Macbeth is a 2006 Australian retelling of the Shakespearian classic directed by Geoffrey Wright and starring Sam Worthington, Victoria Hill, and Lachy Hulme. The film is set in a postmodern, gang-violence ruled Australia. While the Elizabethan dialogue is the same, the setting is updated to reflect a grittier world. Macbeth (Worthington) is now a drug dealer and Lady Macbeth (Hill) is a junkie. Together they murder Duncan (Gary Sweet), the head of the Melbourne underground. Macbeth then assumes the throne as the criminal boss, but when Macduff (Hulme) challenges his usurpation, Macbeth must then fight to keep his newfound power. Murdering becomes the only way that Macbeth can keep his power, and Lady Macbeth proves part and parcel in enacting each of the murders. Director Wright ups the stakes from the original by including more murders and scenes of intense violence. Macbeth received mixed reviews from critics.

Something indeed wicked this way comes in a mangled Macbeth set in contempo gangland Melbourne.

The film is strictly straight-to-video action movie stuff, albeit with dialogue in iambic pentameter.
