Machuca is a 2004 Chilean film starring Matias Quer, Ariel Mateluna, and Manuela Martelli in a story about a wealthy young man who helps his poor friend integrate into an elite school typically reserved for the wealthy during a tumultuous period in Chilean history. The film is set in Chile's capital, Santiago, in 1973. At that time, the country operated under President Salvador Allende, a democratically elected Marxist who operated a socialist government. President Allende was overthrown in 1973 during a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet, and this gripping film takes place shortly before the change in power. Pedro Machuca (Mateluna) is a poor young man at a time when poor Chileans were protesting their diminished place in Chilean society. Gonzalo Infante (Quer) is a privileged young man from a wealthy family that fears the lower class's growing discontent. Infante, however, befriends Machuca and sees the world through the poor boy's eyes. In an effort to help, Infante gets Machuca accepted to his elite school, and as the country changes politically, their friendship is pushed to the limits. Machuca is an honest portrait of a transitory time in Chile's history, and the film is written and directed by Andres Wood.moreless
