This was a legendary disaster of late-1960s Hollywood. It was filmed in the summer of 1967, but not released until the Spring of 1969 after extensive re-editing had shortened the film from three hours to just over two, reducing the roles of many famous actors to very brief cameos. It is said that Columbia initially regarded the film as unreleasable, and that there was some re-shooting. Gregory Peck always refused to discuss it in interviews and once referred to it as "just a miserable thing".
