Movie Summary

Director:
John Forte
Released:
1993
Rating:
PG-13
Mad About Mambo is a 2000 romantic comedy film, written and directed by John Forte and starring William Ash, Maclean Stewart, Russell Smith, Joe Rea, Keri Russell, and Brian Cox. In the movie, William Ash is Danny Mitchell, a Catholic high school student in West Belfast, Ireland, who is an avid soccer player who will do anything to perfect his game. When he realizes that his soccer timing could use some work, he looks to his favorite South American soccer players and is inspired to take Samba lessons so that he may achieve their rhythm and flexibility. At the lessons, he meets Lucy McCloughlin (Keri Russell) an upper-class Protestant who is so many different things that he is not. And yet they fall in love, despite their differences and the small matter of Lucy’s boyfriend, a player on Danny’s soccer team’s rival team. Mad About Mambo has viewers rooting for this unlikely, but adorable, couple.

Metacritic Score

  • 67

    Mr. Showbiz Cody Clark

Mad About Mambo's steps may be as familiar as the hokeypokey, but there's just enough gusto in the execution to make it a guilty pleasure.

  • 50

    TV Guide Maitland McDonagh

This genial little picture, which has been kicking around for more than a year, doesn't have a mean bone in its body.

  • 30

    Variety Robert Koehler

Lacking the kind of fire and energy that the best youth movies demand, leads Ash and Russell display skills better tuned to the small screen.
