Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a 2008 computer-animated film from DreamWorks Animations, the sequel to the popular 2005 computer-animated film, Madagascar. Marty the Zebra (Chris Rocky), Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the Hippopotamus (Jade Pinkett Smith) are back at it'and this time, it's all about uncovering Alex's roots are reconnecting him with his family! When the plane that is supposed to take the zoo animals back to New York, from their brief stint in Madagascar, crash-lands in continental Africa, the animals are shocked to find more animals that are just like them! Marty finds a whole herd of zebra, Gloria starts a fling with smooth-talking hippo Moto Moto (will.i.am), Melman puts his hypochondriacism to good use as a witch doctor, and Alex rediscovers his old tribe! Everything should be perfect, right? Wrong. Especially when it turns out that Alex's tribe has a new, not-so-nice, leader and that a drought is threatening the life in the area. Will they be able to evade sacrifice, figure themselves out, and fix things before it is too late? Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a fun film that fans of Madagascar will enjoy.

Metacritic Score

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

This is a brighter, more engaging film than the original "Madagascar."

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Lively and quite funny without being obnoxious, this follow-up smoothly mixes the original's New York Zoo escapees with a number of engaging new characters.

  • 50

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

Good enough in patches to make its distracting star turns, storybook clichés and stereotypes harder to take than they would be in a less enjoyable movie.
