Movie Summary

Director:
Don Siegel
Released:
1968
Rating:
R

Madigan (1968) gave a great fillip to the career of director Don Siegel and gave Richard Widmark his last great starring role in a movie. In the Spanish Harlem neighborhood of New York City, detectives Dan Madigan and Rocco Bonaro attempt to take Brooklyn hoodlum Barney Benesch into custody, but are humiliated when Benesch escapes - with their guns - and things get worse when they learn he is wanted for murder. Police Commissioner Anthony X. Russell, a stern fellow who insists on playing it by the book, gives the detectives 72 hours to find and arrest Benesch. Russell has issues of his own to deal with - his (married) mistress is feeling guilty and there are threats of a lawsuit against the force due to racism. The detectives finally hunt Benesch down, but tragedy strikes before the case is resolved. One of Siegel's best films.
