Madigan is a 1968 American thriller directed by Don Siegel and starring Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens, and Harry Guardino. In the Spanish Harlem neighborhood of New York City, detectives Dan Madigan (Wdimark) and Rocco Bonaro (Guardino) attempt to take Brooklyn hoodlum Barney Benesch into the station, but get distracted by the suspect's nude girlfriend. Benesch escapes with the detectives' guns and it is later discovered that he is wanted for homicide. Police Commissioner Anthony X. Russell (Fonda) gives the detectives 72 hours to arrest Benesch, but before the deadline is up Benesch has already shot two police officers. Russell has issues of his own to deal with when his mistress calls off their relationship and there are threats of a lawsuit against the force due to racism. When the detectives finally hunt Benesch down, a fatal shooting occurs that will alter the police force forever. Madigan is one of the best-reviewed films of Siegel's career, and eventually spawned a television series.moreless
