Man Friday, a 1975 movie, is based on the classic book, Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe. Robinson Crusoe (Peter O'Toole) is an Englishman who has been stranded alone on an island for many years. When four men in a canoe arrive on the island, Crusoe thinks they are cannibals and kills three of them. He takes the fourth man as prisoner and names him Friday (Richard Roundtree). Crusoe is obsessed with eradicating Friday's "savage" ways and sets out to teach him English customs, manners, and "civilized" ideas. At one point, Friday rebels and refuses to be Crusoe's slave anymore. Crusoe grudgingly accepts Friday as his manservant and pays him one gold coin a day. Several years pass when Friday suddenly attacks Crusoe and grabs his pistol. Putting all the gold coins on the table, he declares himself the master and takes Crusoe as his servant. Friday then forces Crusoe to build a raft and return with him to Friday's native island, but is unprepared for his tribe's reaction.moreless
