Man in the Shadow is a 1957 western movie about tyrannous ranch owner Virgil Renchler (Orson Welles) and his dispute with local town Sheriff, Ben Sadler (Jeff Chandler). Renchler owns not only the vast majority of the town's land and buildings, but also employes a large number of migrant workers as well, one of whom, is murdered. Investigating the murder is Sadler. In an attempt to thoroughly investigate the crime, he continually runs into roadblocks set up by Renchler. Man in the Shadow is about justice and those who uphold it against corruption and those who bring it forth. In a twist, Sadler eventually acquires help from an unlikely source, Virgil Renchler's daughter Skippy (Colleen Miller). While investigating the case, Sadler's headstrong determination puts his job at risk and his life in danger. Sadler must fight for justice as well as his life in Man in the Shadow, or else he risks corruption taking over the town.
