Man of Iron is an award winning Polish film focusing on the years preceding the Solidarity movement. Winkel (Marian Opania), an alcoholic journalist, is sent by the ruling party to try to get dirt on the shipyard protestors. Their motives are to discredit the striking workers in hopes the protests will disappate. Maciek Tomcyik (Jerzy Radziwilowicz) is their main target, a prominent worker and unofficial leader of the protests. His father was killed in a 1970s protest. Winkel interviews many people connected to the worker, including Maciek's detained wife, who also took part in the protests. She uses her past as a radical to gain the trust of the very people she is being hired to undermine and work against. Times are tough and tensions are high. Will Winkel go against the striking workers, or will she turn over a new leaf and join them? What will become of Maciek?
