Man of La Mancha is a 1972 American musical directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Peter O'Toole, Sophia Loren, and James Coco. The film is based off of the popular Broadway musical of the same name written by Dale Wasserman. When Miguel de Cervantes (O'Toole) stages a comedy show mocking the Spanish government, he is thrown in jail and is sentenced to death. When the other inmates learn of his imminent death, they fight over his belongings, but Cervantes is desperate to save his latest manuscript: a comedy about the knight Don Quixote. Cervantes then produces a stage version of his play, which features Cervantes as Quixote. Quixote is a bumbling knight who rarely gets anything right. As he fumbles across the countryside, he comes across the beautiful Aldonza (Loren), with whom he falls madly in love. When she is raped by a band of savages, Quixote must decide where his loyalties lie. Man of La Mancha was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music at the 1973 Academy Awards.moreless
