Man of the Year is an experimental 2002 comedy about a celebration turning into a roast. As the CEO of an energy firm, Bill (John Ritter) has been invited as the guest of honor at a party. Stuart (Clayton Landey), his best friend, hosts the event at his luxurious Hollywood Hills home and invites Bill's wife, Carol (Heidi Mark), Mickey (Dan Ponce), his bookie and even his mistress, Vanessa (Khrystyne Haje). In a house full of friends, their wives and even a few enemies in attendance, Bill expects to receive recognition for his achievements, or at least an enjoyable evening, but instead he experiences a skewering expose of his past and secrets in front of everyone he knows. As his carefully constructed public persona begins to crumple, a gunshot takes the evening into a completely new mood. Director Straw Weisman used improvisational techniques rather than a set script to capture this unique character study, as well as a split screen to show different scenes of the party concurrently.moreless
