PG-13
On June 12, 1964, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island in what remains the most sensational treason trial in the history of South Africa. The liberation of an entire people depended on his freedom. This is the untold true story of the political prisoner and charismatic revolutionary who became the leader of a nation and a symbol for the end of apartheid. Fast forward to February 2, 1990--South African President F.W. de Klerk stands before Parliament and announces the legalization of the Africa National Congress as well as other long-banned political organizations. He also reveals that Nelson Mandela will finally be released from prison after twenty-seven years. The historic moment comes after months of arduous negotiating between Mandela--who refused to be released until his country was free--and the two successive leaders of a white-ruled South Africa, de Klerk and conservative hardliner P.W. Botha. But what personal struggles and dramatic events occurred to precipitate this momentous occasion in history? Mandela and de Klerk recreates the exceptional life of Nelson Mandela, detailing his years of unyielding resolve as a revolutionary with his wife Winnie, his infamous, unauthorized demands from behind prison walls, and his remarkable relationship with de Klerk, a political foe turned unexpected ally. It ends with the forging of an extraordinary understanding between two disparate men, with the peaceful eradication of apartheid, and with Mandela succeeding to de Klerk as the elected leader of all of South Africa.moreless
