Man's Favorite Sport? is a slapstick comedy, laced with witty dialogue and effective sight gags, about Roger Willoughby, who is considered one of the leading experts on sports fishing. He has written several books on the subject and is also highly regarded by customers in the sporting goods department at his workplace, Abercrombie and Fitch. Even though Roger is a star salesman of fishing equipment, he has never really fished and so knows nothing about the sport. When his boss Cadwalader (John McGiver) is presented an idea from publicity director Abigail (Paula Prentiss) to enter him in a fishing contest, the movie ensues into a series of comic consequences as he struggles to fish. With the help of a bear, Roger manages to win the contest, but humbly attributes the win to pure luck. He turns in the prize and loses his job. The movie then focuses on Roger's attempts at winning Abigail's heart.
