March or Die is a 1977 film about a group of French Foreign Legionnaires protecting an archaeological dig in 1918 Morocco. Major William Sherman Foster (Gene Hackman) is their leader, a former American Army officer thrown out for speaking his mind to his superior officers. He has been stationed in Morocco for over 12 years and is not particularly excited about the archeological assignment but goes along anyway. His superiors tell him that the riches promised from the dig will pay for the entire war. Marco Segrain (Terence Hill) is an athletic young man forced into service as punishment for a series of burglaries. As the film progresses Marco turns from a rebellious youth into a disciplined fighter loyal to his fellow soldiers. Other characters include a beautiful widow, Simone Picard (Catherine Deneuve) and Francois Marneau (Max von Sydow), an archaeologist. March or Die is directed by Dick Richards, from a screenplay by David Zelag Goodman.moreless
