Metacritic Score

  • 80

    The Hollywood Reporter Todd McCarthy

Whedon and his cohorts have managed to stir all the personalities and ingredients together so that the resulting dish, however familiar, is irresistibly tasty again.

    Empire James White

The Avengers have been assembled and, for the most part, they fit together superbly. A joyous blend of heroism and humour that raises the stakes even as it maintains a firm grip on...

Big, brash and very funny, Joss Whedon's Avengers Assemble is equal to the sum of its parts ? and for once, that's no faint praise. Suit up.

This movie had such high expectations (hype?) that I went into expecting it a flawless movie. It's not flawless but its still very well done. First hour drags a bit and the ending is action-packed fantastic. Iron Man (Robert Downey steals the show.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Factual errors:
NAMCO Bandai, the video game company is spelled incorrectly twice in the end credits as "NAMECO Bandai". This error was corrected on the DVD and blu ray.

There is a reserved parking sign in a scene filmed in Stuttgart that reads "Reservierten Parken". The correct German spelling would be "Reservierter Parkplatz".

  • QUOTES (13)

    • The Other: The Tesseract has awakened. It is on a little world, a human world. They would wield its power, but our ally knows its workings as they never will. He is ready to lead and our force, our Chitauri, will follow. A world will be his. The universe, yours. And the humans, what can they do but burn?

    • The Other: (to Loki) You will have your war, Asgardian. If you fail, if the Tesseract is kept from us, there will be no realm, no barren moon, no crevice where he cannot find you. You think you know pain? He will make you long for something as sweet as pain.

    • Loki: I am Loki, of Asgard and I am burdened with glorious purpose.
      Selvig: Loki, brother of Thor.
Fury: We have no quarrel with you people.
Loki: An ant has no quarrel with a boot.

    • Stark: (to Thor) Doth mother know you wear-eth her drapes?

    • Iron Man: (Thor has just abducted Loki from the plane that the other Avengers are aboard.) And now there's that guy.
      Black Widow: Another Asgardian?
Captain America: That guy's a friendly?
Iron Man: Doesn't matter. If he frees Loki or kills him, the Tesseract's lost.
Captain America: Stark, we need a plan of attack!
Iron Man: I have a plan. Attack.

    • Rogers: (regarding Loki) This guy packs a wallop.
Stark: Still, you are pretty spry for an older fellow. What's your thing, Pilates?
      Rogers: What?
Stark: It's like calisthenics. You might have missed a couple of things, you know, doing time as a capsicle.

    • Captain America: I want to know why Loki let us take him. He's not leading an army from here.
Banner: I don't think we should be focusing on Loki. That guy's brain is a bag full of cats. You could smell crazy on him.
Thor: Have care how you speak. Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard. And he is my brother.
Black Widow: He killed 80 people in two days.
      Thor: He's adopted.

    • Agent Maria Hill: When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics?
      Stark: Last night.

    • Stark: It's good to meet you Dr. Banner. Your work on anti-electron collisions is unparalleled. And I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control and turn into an enormous green rage-monster.
      Banner: Thanks.

    • Thor: You speak of control, yet you court chaos.
Banner: That's his M.O., isn't it? I mean, what are we, a team? No, no, no, we're a chemical mixture that makes chaos. We're a time bomb.

    • Stark: Why shouldn't the guy let off a little steam?
Rogers: You know damn well why. Back off!
Stark: Oh, I'm starting to want you to make me.
Roger's: Yeah. Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?
      Stark: Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
Roger's: I know guys with none of that worth ten of you. I've seen the footage. The only thing you really fight for is yourself.

    • Banner: I got low. I didn't see an end. So, I put a bullet in my mouth, and the other guy spit it out.

    • Thor: (regarding Stark and Roger's argument) Hahaha. You people are so petty... and tiny.
