Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a 2003 drama from Academy Award-nominated director Peter Weir (The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) that stars Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, and Billy Boyd in a story about the captain and crew of a British warship in pursuit of a deadly French privateer at the start of the 1800s. This film, whose story is a composite of three novels in author Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture. Crowe plays Captain Jack Aubrey of the HMS Surprise, a cunning and seasoned captain who has recently received orders to capture or destroy a French vessel'Acheron--that has been wreaking havoc on British ships throughout the Empire. Acheron is a fast and powerful ship, and it will take all of Jack Aubrey's know-how (and some assistance from his ship's physician, Stephen Maturin) to take down the dangerous ship.
