Mata Hari is a semi-fictional story that is loosely based off of the woman Mata Hari, an exotic dancer from Germany who is convicted of being a spy for Germany while working in Paris. Mata Hari (Greta Garbo) gains information by seducing the Russian General Shubin (Lionel Barrymore), who knows full well that he is committing treason to fulfill his desires. Her job gets tougher when she meets a Russian courier, Alexis Romanoff (Roman Navarro), who carries some important and confidential documents needed in Russia. She spends a night with Romanoff to get the documents he has in his possession. However, the Russian secret police are aware of her antics. Mata Hari finds herself in a very dangerous situation as they do everything they can to gather more evidence. This historical, classic film examines the life of a German spy in World War I, and how one wrong move could be devastating.
