Matilda: Special Edition

Movie Summary

Director:
Danny DeVito
Released:
1996
Rating:
PG
Matilda is a children's fantasy film directed by Danny DeVito based on Roald Dahl's novel of the same name that centers on the life of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a genius of a young girl whose intelligence and compassion is overlooked by her somewhat less than average family. The saying 'you can pick your friends but you can't pick your family' is a bit of an understatement for Matilda. Ignored and belittled by her television and appearance obsessed parents, Harry (Danny DeVito) and Zinnia (Rhea Perlman), Matilda learned at an early age if she wanted to do something, she had to do it herself. Immersed in her imagination and independence, Matilda begins to use her anger at her parents and develops telekinetic powers. When her crooked car dealer of a father makes a deal with a cruel kid-hating principal, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), Matilda finds herself in a school where Trunchbull rules with an iron fist and an iron maiden. The only bright side is her teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz), who turns into the first person to encourage her extreme intelligence and to nurture her abilities. Matilda is a whimsical and fantastical story of what happens when a child's imagination becomes a thing of reality.moreless
