1993
Rating:
PG
Matinee is a 1993 comedy about the premiere of a film in Key West, Florida set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) is an entertainment impresario who decides to screen his latest film in Key West, believing that the climate of fear created by the Cuban Missile Crisis is the perfect setting to show an audience his sci-fi horror film, "Mant!" To stir up even more interest in the film, Woolsey imports rabble-rousers into town to "protest" the film, despite the fact that most of the town is actually looking forward to seeing it. Matinee is split into two distinct halves: the first half of the film details the run-up to the screening of the film, while the second half is concerned with the actual screening of the film and the events that surround it. A throwback to a more innocent time, Matinee is a film about the magic of the movies.
