Max Dugan Returns is a comedy film released in 1983 and was the last Neil Simon film directed by Herbert Ross. In Max Dugan Returns, Max Dugan (Jason Robards), a crime boss, has been released from prison with a serious heart condition. With nowhere to go and facing death, he turns up on the doorstep of his daughter, Nora (Marsha Mason) whom he has not seen since she was nine. He discovers that Nora is a poor, single, mother rearing her son Michael (Matthew Broderick) by herself. Dugan quickly uses his briefcase full of money to spoil Michael and to try to help Nora. Detective Brian Costello (Donald Sutherland), who is dating Nora, knows there is something fishy going on, but must choose between busting Max and having a relationship with Nora. Each character must find their own way in and out of Nora's life without destroying their intimate connections. This film features Matthew Broderick's acting debut, and is one of the only two films which features both Donald Sutherland and Keifer, his son.moreless
