Movie Summary

Director:
Lucky McKee
Released:
2002
Rating:
R
May is the acclaimed 2002 independent horror sensation that took the genre by storm upon its release and has become a much watched cult classic from writer-director Lucky McKee (The Woods, Masters of Horror: Sick Girl). May Dove Canady (Angela Bettis, The Toolbox Murders, Carrie, Girl Interrupted, Wicked Lake) has always been rather lonely. Her only friend is a doll that her Mama (a surprisingly entertaining tiny role by Merle Kennedy, Night of the Demons 2, Junior, Dollman) gave her. However, now that she has her lazy eye fixed, she's getting more popular. She has her eye on a man with great hands (Jeremy Sisto, Hideaway, Wrong Turn, Clueless, White Squall) while the girl she works with (Anna Faris, Scary Movie, Brokeback Mountain, Observe and Report, The House Bunny, My Super-Ex Girlfriend) has eyes on her. However, May is very disturbed and soon things start going horribly wrong.

A stylized work of unflinching control and discipline, reflecting an artistic maturity unusual in a first film.

Led by Ms. Bettis's discreetly campy May, the performances are a cut or two above what you would find in the average slasher film. But in the end that's all it is.
