Mayor of the Sunset Strip is a documentary about the life of Rodney Bingenheimer, a former disc jockey and publicist who became known for the close friendships he developed with many of the most prominent musicians of the 1960s and 1970s. Bingenheimer's parents essentially abandoned him while he was still a teenager. Desperate to find friends, he began to explore the burgeoning Los Angeles music scene. A genuine music enthusiast with a superb facility for making friends, Bingenheimer became close with icons such as Sonny and Cher, David Bowie and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. He would translate these friendships with celebrity musicians into a career as a club owner and later, significantly, a radio DJ on KROQ. While at KROQ, Bingenheimer would be the first DJ to play songs by then unknown bands such as Van Halen, Duran Duran, the Sex Pistols and Blondie. Despite this, his life appears to be quite lonely after so many years in the limelight. Mayor of the Sunset Strip questions the value of what Bingenheimer truly achieved in his desperate need to hobnob with the famous.moreless
