Rating:

Me Without You is a dramatic film directed by Sandra Goldbacher that follows the life and friendship of two best friends, Holly (Michelle Williams) and Marina (Anna Friel), ranging from their first meeting as next door neighbors to their life as it is in the present. Holly and Marina could not be anymore different, despite their proximity. Holly's family is overprotective and Jewish while Marina's mother is laid back and her father's barely a thought. Holly and Marina's friendship ebb and flow with their life at university and later as adults. As the film jumps through the late 70s and 80s, Holly finds herself at odds with Marina's continually destructive behavior, all of which seem to keep Holly from developing any type of romantic relationship, especially with Marina's equally responsive older brother, Nat (Oliver Milburn). Me Without You explores the promise of lifelong friendship even if it is tested time after time.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Under its drab contemporary trappings, the movie, is really a Jane Austen-like moral parable in which goodness is rewarded and selfishness punished.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

An engaging, straightforward narrative about two childhood playmates and the stages of their friendship from 1973 to 2001.

  • 70

    Variety David Rooney

The two appealingly played central characters and the film's enjoyable evocation of the 1970s and '80s keep it buoyant and diverting.
