Meet Bill (Aaron Eckhart), a middle-aged, overweight man, who hates his life. He is married to Jess (Elizabeth Banks), the daughter of a wealthy investment banker, Mr. Jacoby (Holmes Osborne). Together, Bill and Jess live in a house provided by Jess's father. Bill works at Mr. Jacoby's bank in a made-up position, despised by his fellow workers for never having to do any actual work. In another attempt to become financially independent, Bill decides to buy a doughnut franchise with two of his friends. He works to find ways of raising money without his father-in-law's help. During his efforts, he gets more and more suspicious of his wife and her love-life. He plants a camera in their bedroom and catches her and a local news reporter, Chip (Timothy Olyphant), making love. The tape is somehow leaked and threatens to ruin Mr. Jacoby's reputation and destroy his efforts to run for mayor.
