Melody Ranch is a classic 1940 musical comedy starring "The Singing Cowboy" Gene Autry. Pop Laramie (George "Gabby" Hayes) asks radio star Gene Autry (as himself) to return to his hometown for the Frontier Day celebration. With his show ratings dipping, Gene takes the opportunity to spice up his daily broadcast and brings along Julie Shelton (Ann Miller), his leading lady and his fast-talking announcer, Cornelius Courtney (Jimmy Durante). The small town of Torpedo remains the charming, Old West place he remembers and Gene thinks it might be time to leave show business. Gene decides to run for the sheriff's office in an upcoming election and Julie agrees to stay in town. Then the Wildhack brothers, his old rivals, hear of his plans to become the town authority. They scheme to sabotage the election, but Gene and his troupe have learned a thing or two living in the big city. Songs include "What Cowboys Are Made Of" and "Call of the Canyon."moreless
