Melody Trail is a frivolous 1935 western starring Gene Autry in what is most likely his most musical role to date. The story opens with Autry and his friend Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) securing jobs at the Triple T ranch - a rural, backwards estate managed by a beautiful woman named Millicent (Ann Rutherford). After working several shifts in the kitchen, Autry is tasked with watching over a baby. The madness begins when he believes the baby is stolen by a gypsy. Soon Autry and Millhouse are on a wild goose chase which involves more than hunting down a fleeing gypsy - they encounter a nasty dog, several free-spirited cowgirls and a disjointed wedding ceremony. Tying it all together is Autry's singing, which never seizes to amaze. Other noteworthy performances include Wade Boteler, Champion, Buck, Willy Castello, Al Bridge, Fern Emmett, Gertrude Messinger and Tracy Layne. Melody Trail was written by Sherman L. Lowe and Betty Burbridge; Joseph Kane directs.
