Weighed down by her late contractor husband's debts in Bingham, Maryland, widowed mother Beth Macauley (Jessica Lange) is forced to put her house on the market and move to a less costly location. Beth relocates to Baltimore with her two sons Chris (Chris O'Donnell) and Matt (Charlie Korsmo) and gets a job at a gourmet food store run by Lisa Coleman (Kathy Bates). Chris, who is 17, becomes angry and filled with rage as 9-year-old Matt hides his depression and sadness under a steely exterior. While in Baltimore, Beth begins a relationship with a kind musician named Charles (Arliss Howard), who helps to rebuild her shattered self-esteem.
