Merci Pour Le Chocolat is a French thriller brought to you by legendary 1960's filmmaker Claude Chabrol. Andre Polonski (Jacques Dutronc), a concert pianist in his later life, decides to remarry his first wife, Mika Muller (Isabelle Huppert) after his second wife dies. Mika runs a major Swiss chocolate production company. One day Andre is visited by a girl named Jeanne (Anna Mouglalis) who believes she might be his daughter by way of a mix up at the hospital during the time she was born. Oddly enough, Andre has a son, named Guillaume (Rodolphe Pauly), who was born on the same day as Jeanne. As Jeanne gets to know the family better, she realizes she has a lot in common with them. One night, Mika gives Jeanne a monstrous proportion of hot chocolate as a 'night cap' before falling asleep. When some of the concoction spills on Jeanne, and her boyfriend tests it, they realize that what Mika actually served was a medley of sedatives and drugs. It is clear Mika has murderous intentions, but how can Jeanne leave Andre's house now that she is so close to discovering the truth behind her birth?moreless

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Once again Chabrol's son Mathieu has composed a crucially evocative score, and Renato Berta's cinematography is gleaming. Merci Pour le Chocolat crackles with wit and elegance, hum...

    Variety Derek Elley

A treat, a delicious blend of perversity, playfulness and deadly passion concealed beneath the tranquil, moneyed surface of the Swiss bougeoisie.

Mr. Chabrol's droll assault on petit-bourgeois security feels like a satire of "Ordinary People" directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
