Mesmer is a historical dramatic film directed by Robert Spottiswoode that centers on the controversial work of medical physician Franz Anton Mesmer (Alan Rickman) in 18th century Vienna, Austria. At a time when medicine and psychology were at the beginnings of what we know today, Mesmer doubted that the favored medical treatments of the time, such as leeching and bleeding, were dangerous and ineffective. Developing a treatment called “animal magnetism”, Mesmer used scientific methods of magnetic currents and metals in order to dissipate any of the blockages within a patient’s bloodstream. Touted as a threat and a lunatic, a scandal spreads when he treats the famous pianist, Maria Theresa Paradies (Amanda Ooms) with his new treatment utilizing the power of suggestion. The public scandal and lies that spread afterwards forced Mesmer to leave Vienna in disgrace, only to find Paris welcoming him with open arms.
