Mesmerized is a 1989 crime drama that was based on the 19th century murder case of Victoria Thompson, a resident of New Zealand accused of killing her husband. The film shows how the circumstances of Victoria's life led her to being in such a position. 18 year old Victoria (Jodi Foster) is a naive, poor orphan with no one to turn to. Necessity leads her to marry Oliver Thompson (John Lithgow), a cruel, older man. When she moves into his home, she finds out that he is even more cruel than she ever thought. After suffering abuse at his hands and discovering his odd sexual habits, Victoria begins to fear for her safety. She begins to plot an escape from this nightmarish existence, and becomes even more desperate as time passes and his abuse gets worse. When Oliver turns up dead, naturally Victoria becomes the prime suspect in his murder and finds herself persecuted nationwide.
