Mid-August Lunch is a 2008 comedy-drama from renowned Italian writer Gianni DiGregorio making his directorial debut. He stars as a man named Gianni who lives in Rome with his elderly, but demanding mother (Valeria De Franciscis). He seeks refuge from her and their growing debt at his local tavern. As he seeks money from friends, Gianni realizes he can provide a service for his friends who also have elderly mothers. They are all planning on leaving Rome for Italy's biggest summer holiday, Pranzo di Ferragosto. When they leave, they need someone to look after these women. Gianni offers to do so to help pay off some of his family's debts. He brings together his mother with his landlord's mother (Marina Caccioti) and aunt (Maria Cali) as well as his doctor's mother (Grazia Cesarini Sforza). These women from different backgrounds and classes sit for a hilarious and poignant lunch presided over by an overwhelmed Gianni.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

A slender Chekhovian vignette about the joys and regrets of old age and the pleasures of sociability.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

The whole thing is as satisfying as a meal at a slow food restaurant, and when Gianni's mother gratefully tells her son, "you mellow these hours," we wholeheartedly agree.

  • 80

    Variety

A surefire pleaser for crowds of a certain age.
