Miracle on Ice is the made for TV movie about the U.S. Olympic hockey team's victory in the 1980 Winter Olympics. The U.S. team was made up of amateur and college players, and was the seventh-seeded team in the tournament, entering as serious underdogs. On the other side of the ice was The Soviet Union team, who entered the tournament as heavy favorites, winning the gold medal in 1956 and every year since 1964, with barely any losses and a reputation as being the best team in the world by a long shot. Hard-nosed U.S. coach Herb Brooks (Karl Malden) led the team, bringing physical and cohesive playing that surprised the whole world, taking down Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Romania and more top teams on their way to facing the best, the Soviets. The Soviets stormed through their opposition with hugely lopsided scores, and tried to bring that momentum into the championship game. The press and the fans didn't think the U.S. had a chance, but Herb's tough coaching brought them to the big show, proving that underdogs can rise to the top.moreless
