Miss Julie is a dramatic film directed by Mike Figgis based on August Strindberg’s play of the same name that chronicles a young self-destructive wealthy daughter of a count, Miss Julie (Saffron Burrows), as her loneliness leads her to an affair with an ambitious servant, Jean (Peter Mullan). As the Midsummer’s eve draws a part for the servants, Miss Julie finds herself left behind by her aristocratic father. Angry and depressed with the recent break of her engagement to be married, she joins in the lower class festivities by becoming a third wheel in her cook, Christine (Maria Doyle Kennedy), and Jean’s relationship. She flirts and manipulates the night away, hoping to gain some semblance of control in her life. Jean on the other hand takes it as his chance to become something more than a servant, even if he has to break his own engagement to Christine. As the night progresses with the desires of Midsummer, Miss Julie and Jean have to come to terms with what the new day brings and what it would mean for their future.moreless
