Missing is a 1982 political drama about the disappearance of an American activist, Charles Horman (John Shea), in an unnamed South American country in the early 1970s. When Charles' wife Beth (Sissy Spacek) gets stonewalled by the authorities, as well as the U.S. Embassy, Charles' conservative father Ed (Jack Lemmon) flies down to aid in the search. Ed has been at odds with his son and daughter-in-law for years over their leftist political leanings, but as the two try to work their way through the bureaucratic quagmire, they develop a close bond. Ed starts to question his staunch patriotism and suspect the U.S. government knows more than it is letting on. This controversial film, heavily criticized by the Reagan administration at the time of its release, was written and directed by Costas Gravas. Missing is based on the true story of American journalist Charles Horman, who disappeared in Chile in 1973, during the coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power.moreless
