Mister Roberts is a 1955 American comedy film. It follows Douglas Roberts (Henry Fonda), an executive office aboard the USS Reluctant. Despite not being captain, he is actually the one in charge of making sure the ship runs smoothly. He is friends with each of the crewmen and allows them certain liberties when the captain isn't looking. As a result, the crew work harder to please him. The ship's captain, Morton (James Cagney), realizes this and works to make sure Roberts is satisfied with his life aboard the ship. He keeps Roberts around by constantly dangling a promotion right in front of him, sometimes literally by showing him a Commander's hat and telling him that the position is currently available. When Roberts gets bored and requests a transfer to the more action-filled Pacific Theatre, Morton must go to new lows to keep his favorite executive officer from leaving and destroying the USS Reluctant's spotless record.
