Misty is a 1961 drama film based on the award-winning novel written by Marguerite Henry, Misty of Chincoteague. The stars of the film are Arthur O'Connell, Pam Smith, and David Ladd. Misty follows the adventures of two children, Paul Beebe (David Ladd) and Maureen Beebe (Pam Smith) living on Chincoteague Island during the early 20th century. The film takes place during a major cultural event for the inhabitants of the island known as "The Pony Swim". During the event a group of people travel to nearby Assateague Island and herd a group of ponies back to Chincoteague for a benefit auction. During the events, Paul and Maureen capture an elusive horse called Phantom. Phantom soon bears a foal, who they name Misty. Most of the filming for Misty took place on Chincoteague Island. In addition, the extras in the film were local inhabitants. Only six professional actors were featured in the film.
