Money Kings is a gritty 1998 crime drama starring Peter Falk as Vinnie, the owner of a local pub and backroom bookie operation. Vinnie has cautiously worked hand-in-hand with the Mafia for nearly 30 years and, at the same time, kept his customers' best interests at heart by ensuring that they didn't get in too deep. His fatherly relationship with his customers is threatened when a local mob head, looking for higher profits, sends his drug-addicted and temperamental nephew Tony (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) to learn the trade from Vinnie. Vinnie takes Tony under his wing, not knowing that he is, in essence, training his ruthless replacement. Tony rejects Vinnie's paternal way of doing things and takes a sizeable bet from Frankie Patterson (Timothy Hutton), an unemployed alcoholic. When Frankie is unable to pay his debt, Tony begins pressuring his wife Marybeth (Lauren Holly) to pay up. Vinnie, looking to save his reputation as a good man and friend to his patrons, butts heads with Tony over his harsh collection practices and tries to find Marybeth a way out of the debt. But Vinnie soon realizes that he's in over his head and may not be able to escape alive, let alone with his reputation intact.moreless
