Mongolian Ping Pong is the poignant and often hilarious tale of what happens when a ping pong ball mysteriously appears in a Mongolian village. The ball, found floating in a river, captivates Bilike (Hurichabilike) and his two friends, Erguotu (Geliban) and Dawa (Dawa). They do not know what it is or what it is used to do. With shades of the 1980s independent hit The Gods Must Be Crazy, the boys take the ball around their village to determine what it is. Bilike's grandmother says the ball is a glowing pearl from heaven. To find out if this is true, the boys stay up all night waiting for the ball to light up. Even the monks in the local monastery do not know what this small white ball is. Bilike's father (Yidexinnaribu) sees the ball called China's national ball while watching television. The boys then decide to bring this most important object to the Chinese capital where it rightfully belongs. Mongolian Ping Pong is a captivating tale of youth and imagination that should not be missed.moreless

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

Although its leisurely pace might be a bit tough going for restless Westerners, Mongolian Ping Pong is the kind of film that should rightly be seen by children, not just adventurou...

    Variety Derek Elley

A charming but overextended yarn about some prairie tykes who mistake a table-tennis ball for a glowing pearl from the gods.

Hao doesn't seem to have a point of view. Mongolian Ping-Pong is episodic and meandering, with several tedious stretches.
