Monsieur Hire is a 1989 French psychological thriller starring Michel Blanc as the title character. Monsieur Hire is a middle-aged, misanthropic tailor who escapes his life of solitude by spying on a beautiful neighbor with a habit of leaving her curtains open. Hire observes Alice's (Sandrine Bonnaire) carefree eroticism from afar as she carries on a torrid affair. At the same time, a woman's naked body is discovered in an abandoned lot in Hire's neighborhood. He soon finds himself with unwanted attention from a suspicious and very persistent detective. After a flash of lightning illuminates Hire spying on Alice, she goes to meet him and he makes her a surprising offer. There are plenty of exciting plot twists, especially as the two stories begin to converge, but the film never loses its focus on the main characters and their sometimes opaque motivations. Critics have also praised Monsieur Hire's striking cinematography and score.
