Monster Camp introduces us to the inhabitants and world of LARPing, which stands for Live-Action Role-Playing. This documentary takes an in-depth look into the people who take part in this interesting hobby and the pros and cons of it as a way of escaping the real world. The documentary followed a Seattle, Washington chapter of the New England Role playing Organization (NERO), one of many live-action role-playing organizations found within the US. During the film, we meet a number of gamers, many of whom also obsessively play the PC video game "World of Warcraft," an online equivalent with an estimated 8 million subscribers. These characters come from all walks and stages of life, but many do come across as letting the fantasy take over because of their bleak look to reality. There's your stereotypical jobless geek working on trying to graduate high school, the middle-aged man whose family complains that he spends far too little time with them and the disgruntled store clerk who takes out his anger on those in the game. Monster Camp captures some of the mindset behind these characters and tries to determine if their use of this is just a healthy form of escapism or a way to avoid reality.moreless
