Monster Maker is a 1989 television movie that originally aired as part of the short lived Jim Henson Hour show. It was directed by Giles Foster. The film follows Matt Banting (played by Kieran O'Brien), a moody young teen who is obsessed with the work of special effects master Chancey Bellow (played by Harry Dean Stanton). Banting meets up with the effects master and ends up getting to work for him. In Bellow's creature shop Banting befriends the Ultra-Gorgon, a gigantic animatronic dragon. With help from the dragon Matt confronts his own personal inner monsters and works out the issues he has with his own father. The film was adapted from the novel by Nicholas Fisk. Fans of Jim Henson films such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal will enjoy this small slice of 1980s television.
