Moonrise is a 1948 suspense film directed by Frank Borzage. The film is set in the Southern United States during the early 20th century. Moonrise revolves around the life of Danny Hawkins (Dane Clark). Hawkins lives in a small town where he is constantly harassed because his father was executed for murder. Danny and his girlfriend, Gilly Johnson (Gail Russell), are on a date when they are attacked by a homeless man. Danny kills the man in self-defense, but fears that his father's reputation will make it impossible for him to receive fair treatment from the authorities. Hawkins flees into the swamp while Sheriff Clem Otis (Allyn Joslyn) works to solve the crime. Little does Danny know that he will find all the answers to his problems and more in the bayou. Moonrise is based on the novel written by Theodore Strauss. The film was adapted from the novel and produced by Charles Haas.
