Mortal Thoughts is a psychological thriller about two friends caught up in dysfunctional marriages, but one marriage ends in murder. Cynthia (Demi Moore) and Joyce (Glenne Headly) have been inseparable since childhood and now work side by side as beauticians in a New Jersey salon. The film opens with home movies showing the two as children happily playing together, but the scene quickly fades into a somber police interrogation room with Cynthia now facing detectives John Woods (Harvey Keitel) and Linda Nealon (Billie Neal). The story unfolds through Cynthia's flashbacks as she describes Joyce's turbulent relationship with her husband, James (Bruce Willis). From their wedding day on, macho James drank too much, stole money from the beauty salon and threatened Joyce with violence. Cynthia's own husband, Arthur (John Pankow), is a workaholic oaf who wants his wife to cut ties with her lifelong friend. However, Cynthia can only watch as Joyce openly speculates about ways to kill James. After one eventful night at a carnival, Cynthia walks into a police station and accuses her dear friend of murder.
