Mother Night is a 1996 drama, based on a novel of the same name written by Kurt Vonnegut. The film follows Howard Campbell (Nick Nolte), an American who moves to Germany as a child with his diplomat parents. Campbell decides to stay in Germany as an adult and becomes a well known playwright. He marries Helga Noth (Sheryl Lee), an entertainer. During the World War II, Campbell is recruited by Major Frank Wirtanen (John Goodman), an American spy from the OSS. Campbell, working undercover, works his way into the Nazi propaganda ministry, becoming the the "Last Free American." While broadcasting anti-semitic messages to American listeners, he is also passing on secret messages by code to the allied forces. Campbell's life begins to unravel when Helga is killed while entertaining troops on the Eastern front. Helga's younger sister, Resi (Kirsten Dunst) proclaims her love for him shortly before Germany falls and he is captured by allied forces. Just before he is to be tried as a Nazi war criminal, Wirtanen rescues him and helps him escape to New York. Campbell finds his new life in New York boring, and becomes ambivalent about his future. When his past catches up with him, he must find a way to reconcile his past with his new life in America.moreless
