Mothra is a 1961 Japanese monster film about the giant moth creature who is second only to Godzilla in monster popularity. Whereas most monster films, Godzilla included, focus on vicious creatures who destroy human cities at will, Mothra tells a different kind of story. After a shipwrecked crew accidentally discovers an unknown, primitive culture on a radioactive island, an expedition is formed to explore the dangerous new territory, formerly used for atomic testing. An international crew of scientists, explorers, and one sensationalist reporter travels to the island and discovers a pair of beautiful women only twelve inches tall. When the mysterious tiny women are taken from the island by an evil opportunist, the island's powerful insect deity is awakened and begins a quest of destruction to recover the women. This film stars Frankie Sakai as Zen-Chan Fukuda and Hiroshi Koizumi as Dr. Shin'ichi Tyuujou.
