William Asher

1985

Movers & Shakers is a hilarious comedy about going too far when trying to keep a promise. Joe Mulholland (Walter Matthau) is a big-wig at a major Hollywood studio. He visits his dying friend and foolishly makes a promise to turn one of his pet projects into a full-budget film. Unfortunately, that pet project involves making a movie out of an infamous sex manual called "Love and Sex." Mulholland tries to back out, but before he can, his friend dies and he is stuck with this promise. Unfortunately, he is too paranoid of the vengeful dead to break the promise and goes forward with making the film. He hires a deeply depressed writer, Herb Derman (Charles Grodin) to write the screenplay and a quirky, psychopathic director, Sid Spokaine (Bill Macy) to try and turn this sexual abomination into a gainful film. As filming begins, Joe wishes more and more that he wasn't a nice guy, so he could simply break the promise and get things over with.
