Mr. Peabody & The Mermaid is a 1948 feature film that combines fantasy and postwar romanticism with angst about the conflicting drives of fidelity, security and adventure. The movie begins as the main character, Arthur Peabody (William Powell), goes on a vacation to the Caribbean with his wife Polly (Irene Harvey). Earlier in the film, Arthur's vacation had been prompted by a midlife crisis, and the movie itself is framed around the discussions of Arthur and his doctor. The Caribbean vacation is going as planned until Arthur accidentally catches a mermaid while fishing. Unfortunately, Arthur is attracted to the mermaid and despite the fact that she's half-fish, he begins an affair with her. Events get even more confused as Arthur attempts to hide the mermaid in his bathtub and then the hotel's pool, while trying to explain to his wife why he's devoting so much attention to this unusual looking fish. The line between reality and fiction gets blurrier as Arthur runs into increasingly fishy situations. Mr. Peabody & The Mermaid is truly a film in its own genre.moreless
