Mr. Wonderful is a romantic comedy film directed by Anthony Minghella that follows the antics of a goofy and reasonable electrician Gus (Matt Dillon) as his chances to own and restore the local bowling alley with his friends is hindered by his ex-wife’s still-single status. You see, if Leonora (Anabella Sciorra) never remarries then Gus still has to pay her alimony, which drains him of the necessary funds needed for the alley. With the pushing of his girlfriend Rita (Mary-Louise Parker) and his friends, including the gung-ho Harvey (Dan Hedaya), Gus tries his hand at matchmaking, pulling in all his single acquaintances, including the near-angelic pharmacist Dominic (Vincent D’Onofrio) and the not-so-great Mike (James Gandolfini), in order to get his ex hitched. It might not be the best of plans considering she’s currently seeing her married college professor Tom (William Hurt) and Gus is starting to remember just what brought them together in the first place.
